It was announced this week that Marissa Mayer, a high ranking executive and long term employee of Google is heading to competitor Yahoo as their new CEO. This is a great victory for the struggling Yahoo as they face an uphill battle to regain momentum against competitors like Facebook and Google. The move will also make Mayer one of the most powerful women in Silicon Valley where very few women achieve top ranking positions. Mayer has been with Google since practically the beginning and was responsible for some of their most successful products and designs. As the first female engineer at Google Mayer was responsible for the plain white home search page, Google News, Gmail and Google Images. She has also overseen Google’s local services and location programs like Google Maps. Mayer is not only looking forward to finally obtaining such a high level position but to undertake the challenge of making Yahoo a true competitor in the search engine market again.
