Twitter fails across much of the planet, a day before start of Olympics

The mega popular micro blogging site Twitter seems to have gone down just as a huge spike in activity was expected as the start of the 2012 Olympic games. The company acknowledged the problem, saying in a statement that its engineers are “currently working to resolve the issue,” although it didn’t go into any further detail. Visitors to the site were greeted with the half-formed message: “Twitter is currently down for %(equals) reason %.” “We expect to be back in %(equals) deadline %,” the site said. Outages started being reported in countries in North America, Europe and Asia. People were unable to post tweets to the site, which is not a new problem for Twitter but an unexpected one the day before such a huge world wide event. The 2012 Olympics were expected to bring a unprecedented surge of activity by fans throughout the games as people make live commentary on the events taking place.
